For weeks now, the glint of silver coming from an alley just off Market has hinted at good things to come … and good things are here. Maker’s Alley is open and welcoming guests at this crafty indoor/outdoor oasis that runs between Shipley and Orange streets near 8th. The silver Airstream kitchen outside pumps out an eclectic array of food, the bar is stocked with good finds, and according to General Manager Megan Babcock (who we talked to Tuesday, right before happy hour), people are already finding their way down the alley, and staying awhile:

“Yesterday was the Day One, for everything. We quietly put the word out and then opened at 11 for lunch. And we were open until 1am.”

“We’re excited to show everyone what we’ve been working on for so long! It’s something that Wilmington hasn’t seen before, somewhere people can relax and spend a few hours hanging out with friends and family.”

“There’s games to play. There are hammocks to lie in. There’s a fire pit to sit around. We have four TVs, two inside the building and two outside, so you can watch the game. Even come winter, we have outdoor heaters, a fireplace. We’re looking to add some blankets.”

Tell us more about the menu.

“We have everything from hummus to bao buns to burgers to chicken bacon ranch nachos to a shepherd’s pie hot pocket. We’ve gotten really great feedback on that one. It’s like an empanada, but really big.”

“And say you’re in a rush for lunch and you’re looking for something different? You can go on our website, order online and come pick it up.”

And the drinks?

“We have 24 beers on tap and a huge canned beer selections, as well as cocktails and wine. We have beers from Bell’s – I’m actually from Michigan originally, so I always love bringing in a Michigan beer. We have staples like Miller Lite and Michelob Ultra, things that are the easier drinking, and then we have a more crafty selection.”
