Following a headlining spot at this summer’s Shady Grove Music Fest, Cosmic Guilt returns to Arden for an evening at Gild Hall celebrating the vinyl release of their self-titled album. They will be joined for a solo set from Toby Leaman, vocalist and bassist of Dr. Dog.
What began as a hazy Sunday morning ritual in James Everhart’s Queen Village living room has blossomed into Cosmic Guilt, a heavily-fringed, psychedelic-tinged dectet. Ethereal harmonies floating over twelve-string guitar and pedal steel are the calling card for this Philadelphia folk supergroup, boasting past and present members of Low Cut Connie, Scantron, The Lawsuits, Ruby the Hatchet, The Flying Vees, Pale Blue Lights, Gozer, Milieu Lust, and countless others.
After a brief stint with smaller lineups throughout 2019, their eponymous debut album was tracked over the next two years with drummer-engineer Josh Friedman and Everhart co-producing. During this time, the band doubled in size, adding Zena Kay’s runaway-train pedal steel and the soaring harmonies of Jillian and Hannah, the Taylor Sisters (no relation). “Cosmic Guilt” serves as a love letter to the country-adjacent folk of Laurel Canyon in the early seventies. Dynamic singles composed by Everhart (“Cautious Lovers,” Sun In Your Eyes,” “Silver and Lead”) and George Murphy (“Cosmic Guilt”) are in heavy rotation at WXPN, WFMU, and other notable stations across the country propelled by acclaimed performances at NonComm and Xponential Music Festival.
