Description

Belvidere, the home garden of Andrew Bunting, Vice President of Public Horticulture at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is a showcase of his passion, expertise, and creativity. Since 1999 Andrew has groomed this 1/3rd acre property in Swarthmore with his favorite plants. The gravel garden, created in March 2020, welcomes you upon arrival with thoughtful water-wise plantings. Unusual shrubs and vines seamlessly anchor the foundation of the home into the landscape.  In the back garden, a large bluestone patio overflows with carefully curated ornamental containers.  The stone garage converted into a summer house opens into a Mediterranean-like garden. A large tropical garden planted with red Abyssinian bananas, bromeliads and cannas during the summer opposes a long perennial border backed by a hedge of Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’.  The back of the property is densely planted with a woodland garden and pond; a utilitarian area with compost bins and a potager that alternates yearly between vegetables and cut flowers. A joint project with his neighbors resulted in the addition of Vassar Farm, a 40’ x 100’ suburban farm created and maintained by Andrew on his neighbor’s property.
