Description

Paper Portraits features three artists that create in their own distinctive styles and mediums while shared motives and imagery bind them together. The portraits become messengers of universal themes; the color and design convey a world seeped in strength, possibility, and hope. As intimate as the pieces are individually, the communication between each artists’ work and the subtle play between the language of the artists as a whole evoke our infinite humanity.

Kara Hinson Is a visual artist based in Delaware. Her art prominently features representations of black women in a variety of medium including vivid, layered watercolor portraits and illustrative ink and digital drawings. Surrealistic colors create a dreamlike atmosphere in which her paintings focus on the diversity and strength of women. Often incorporating themes of nature, astrology, and nostalgia, her work aims to offer inspiration and tranquility.

Shefon Taylor is a self-taught artist and designer whose work is centered on themes of memory, history, and imagination. Her work incorporates disjointed aspects of ordinary Black mid-century womanhood, vintage textures and patterns, and muted color palettes to create surreal stories and images. The often opaque and poetic themes weave together these elements to arrive at an understanding of her present life, the lives of women before her, and the possibilities of an imagined future. Taylor’s numerous creative obsessions are fueled by the discovery and affirmation, “may the women with whom I share blood, speak my name and never find themselves alone.”

Lauren E. Peters is a studio artist at The Delaware Contemporary known for her vibrant self-portraits. She uses clothing, wigs, and props to create different versions of herself that comment on the importance and weight of appearances, the complexity of identity, and the conceptualization of the feminine. She has exhibited her portraits nationally and continues to expand the world they inhabit.
